Here it is (a little late I apologize)...my recap for the Supernatural season seven premiere! In my opinion it was the most incredible supernatural premieres ever aired and it gave us quite a lot to think about. We rejoin our favorite brothers in the room where Castiel has appointed himself God. He warns the brothers (and Bobby) that they will bow down and worship and love him or they will be punished and that's exactly what he does to other unfaithful people throughout the episode. "For your sake, I hope this is that last time you see me." Fully charged with the souls from purgatory and other things (we'll touch on that in a bit) he sets off to begin his smiting.
The first place he visits is the church of a hypocritical priest. I got the hint it was a jab at the Westboro Baptist Church and its congregation. "...that's why we protest their weddings and funerals," says the priest and he goes onto to say how this is what God wants. Enter Castiel. He announces he is God and that the one thing he can't stand are hypocrites like the priest (who is killed by coughing up his lies and deceit...literally). As Castiel walks out to leave, a voice enters his head. "Castiel..." it calls in an angry whisper. He turns his head to the stain glass window with a picture...of Jesus. When Cas turns his head again it becomes a picture of him. God (the real one) is not taking this well.
Dean is fixing the Impala (again) where he and Bobby discuss the looming threat of the all-new God and if Sammy has really recovered from the wall, defending against his memories of hell, breaking. It is apparent very early in the episode that Sam is hiding relapses from Dean and Bobby (probably under that long hair of his...GET A HAIRCUT! Sorry.). After some very witty banter including, Dean: "Before I get kicked in the daddy pills," and Bobby: "I lost my God gun so..." Dean: "Don't worry Bobby, I got a spare you can borrow," things become quite hairy.
Crowley reveals that Castiel has swallowed a lot more than the souls of deceased creatures from purgatory, but also the first beasts, Leviathan. They are seen trying to break through the skin of Castiel's vessel (ewww) and the vessel begins to wear down. Despite Castiel's intentions being noble (apparent when he heals the blind man), he has taken on more than he can handle and became obsessed with power. After Sam, Dean, and Bobby bind Death and try to kill Castiel (where he shows up, frees Death, and almost kills the boys), Death agrees to create another eclipse so the door to purgatory can open. If they can get Castiel to relinquish to souls back to purgatory all will be as it was. "And if you try to bind me again," Death warns, "you'll be dead before you start."
When Leviathan causes Castiel to black out and murder a campaign office of all its members, Castiel begins to strongly feel remorse more than his love for power and goes to the brothers for help. As they wait for the eclipse, Castiel spirals downward fast. At 3:59am when the eclipse hits, Castiel releases the souls back to purgatory and dies. A few seconds later he wakes up. "That was unpleasant." Dry humor back, Castiel safe, the world is back to normal. All is well. For about thirty seconds. Turns out Leviathan held on inside him and takes control of Castiel. On top of that, Sam is still having hallucinations of the devil and has now disappeared into thin air. "This is going to be so much fun," sneers a Leviathan-fueled Castiel.
Obviously there's tons of questions. Here's what I came up with. Is God going to ever show up in the series? He was talking in Castiel's head so that has to mean something. Where is Sam? He was just, poof, gone. Is Castiel dead or still alive inside his vessel trying to fight Leviathan? How on Earth are they supposed to stop creatures from the beginning of time?? Thoughts, comments, ideas, heart-attack moments?
