After an hour of werewolf-searching, Stefan-hunting, and dead sister/girlfriend communicating festivities, my brain was close to overload. We re-enter the story with Stefan and Klaus in the mountains of Tennessee looking for the rest of Ray's pack. And find it they do. With two vampires (well I guess one vampire and one hybrid) versus at least ten werewolves, Klaus and Stefan easily take the upper hand. After successfully (so Klaus thinks) turning the pack into hybrids, the boys await the time when the group will wake up and Klaus will have his army...
Elena is still defiantly searching for Stefan, obviously not heeding the warning from Damon. Since she knows Damon has given up on his brother, Elena enlists the help of resident werewolf Tyler Lockwood to shed some light on possible areas were a pack of werewolves might be settled.....more specifically Ray's pack because knows if she finds that pack she finds Stefan. After Tyler gives her the coordinates, Elena asks Alaric to go with her. He hesitantly agrees, but Elena is unaware the he has tipped Damon off to what they are about to do. When Damon finds to two hiking through the mountains, he does everything in his power to make a Elena turn around and go home. Of course she refuses and he agrees to let her stay as long as they are gone before moonrise.
But werewolves aren't the only things they have to worry about. Being the first turned, Ray is the first to wake up and it soon becomes apparent that something has gone wrong in his hybrid transformation. His, and later the rest of the pack's, eyes begin to bleed profusely. Ray ends up spazzing out and in an attempt to calm him down, Stefan is bitten and Ray escapes. "Fatal werewolf bite, ouch," Klaus replies. "Yeah, I'm gonna need your blood to heal me," says Stefan."I'll tell you what, you find Ray and the I'll heal you." With a look of shock Stefan blurts, "You can't be serious." "You better hurry cause that bite looks nasty," sneers Klaus. My heart nearly dropped to the floor as I prepared for another Damon-like dying episode.
And who does Ray find when he leaves Klaus and Stefan? Why none other than Damon, Elena, and Ric. After a quick attack against Damon they finally tie Ray to a tree. But something strange happens...Ray begins to turn even though the moon isn't up. Panicking, the three run for their lives, abandoning their mission to find Stefan. At least until Ray, as a wolf, threatens Elena. "Here, doggie doggie," says Damon as he super speeds away and Ray chases after him. Ray ends up being too much for Damon to handle and when it starts to (again) look grim, Stefan rips out Ray's heart to save day. It is in this moment that Damon realizes Stefan isn't beyond saving and at the end of the episode he promises to help Elena save Stefan.
Things don't work out as nicely for Klaus. His hybrid army bleed out to death from a failure in the transformation. "I don't understand," he says and he lists all the instructions he followed. He ends with, "I killed the doppelganger." The immediate stare down between Stefan and Klaus had me on the edge of my seat as I was sure Klaus figured out Elena was still alive. My breath still held he simply replied, "I guess you're the only comrade I have left now." He then hands Stefan a beer bottle filled with his blood. Crisis adverted...at least for the time being.
Other side notes to mention: Tyler shows his mother he's werewolf and she promises not to hurt Caroline. Unfortunately, she calls in a friend, Bill (later revealed to be Caroline's father), to help her with her vampire issues and he is not so easy to let Caroline go. Matt and Jeremy also strike up an unusual relationship as they try to contact Vicki. "Help me," she says again to Jeremy. "What's she saying?" asks Matt. Looking back, Anna takes Vicki's place and she warns Jeremy not to trust Vicki.
Questions still on my mind: Does Klaus really know Elena is alive? Now that Damon told Elena to remember how she feels about him when Stefan isn't there, how will it affect the relationship between her and Stefan? How far is Caroline's father willing to go to "save" is daughter? And last but not least, who is telling the truth? Vicki or Anna?
